COVID19

*****APRIL 27 - # OF PASSENGERS IN PRIVATE CAR CORRECTED – FLIGHTS BACK TO THE US*****

So, the information received last week, when the change to the SalvoConductor rules came out, regarding the number of passengers in a private vehicle on the day the vehicle can drive, was incorrect.

You can drive you PRIVATE vehicle on the ONE ALLOWED day, with 1 driver and 1 passenger……just as it has been from day one.

This was verified today with the Municipio and with much observation. There is a police stop at the end of my street and the police were NOT stopping any private vehicle, with a 1 or 2 plate, that had 2 people in it.

I am sorry for the confusion……and I do my best to verify information from the best source before I publish it…..but….well……it does not always work.

ALSO…if there are any of you trying to leave here, waiting on your regularly scheduled commercial flight, you may just want to look into the humanitarian flights. There is still no date for regular international travel to open. If you want to get back to the states and you are a US citizen, look into the flights that were posted on the prior email I send (or go to www.cotahealth.org, COVID19 tab) and/or contact the US Embassy.

Below is an interesting article that was posted in Cuenca Highlife

*****APRIL 25 – PRIVATE CARS – SALVOCONDUCTOR PASS – FLIGHTS BACK TO THE US*****

PRIVATE CARS CAN ONLY HAVE A DRIVER – NO PASSENGERS:

There is a change with private vehicles, they are NOW only allowed a DRIVER and no PASSENGER. This was confirmed with the Cotacachi Chief of Police. So, if you have a your own vehicle, only YOU can be driving the car…..NO additional passenger.

NEW SALVOCONDUCTOR PROCESS:

If you need a SalvoConductor pass to travel on a day that is not your day to drive, there are new questions to be answered on the website. Also, as stated before, the pass is only good for 24 hours, so you need to do this the AM of when you need it. Be advised, the wait time on the website has been excessive. WWW.GOB.EC

FLIGHTS BACK TO THE US:

The flight on the 29th to Fort Lauderdale is definitely flying as I know at one person taking this flight…..

*****APRIL 15 – NO NEW NEWS – PLEASE USE THE NEW WEBSITE *****

Sorry for not emailing in the last few days….we just had no new news to report!

There is still just 2 confirmed cases of COVID19 in Cotacachi, 2 in Otavalo, 3 in Antonio Ante and 27 in Ibarra….for a total of 34 cases in our province of Imbabura. This week, we are in a new “traffic light” system where provinces will be classified as RED, YELLOW and GREEN. Right now, all of Ecuador is still classified at RED, but in the coming weeks, some provinces may move to YELLOW with less restrictions. I have no idea what the change in the restrictions will be, we just have to wait and see. But once we know the changes, I will email you all!

Also, please check out the new CHC website www.cotahealth.org. On the COVID19 tab, every single email I have sent is there, in newest to oldest order. If you think you may have missed an email, just go there to check.

Remember, if you go out, you MUST wear a mask. Don’t risk being fined by not having some face covering.

I know we all long to be free to move about whenever we want…..and eventually we will get there. Just pull a bit more patience out of your reserve……WE CAN ALL DO THIS!

*****April 11 : Guidelines for Seeking Medical Attention-Prescription Drugs from Outside of Ecuador-Movement Rules Clarified*****

Guidelines for Seeking Medical Attention in Cotacachi:

This information was from Dra. Luz, practicing physician in town and wife of our Mayor Auki…..

FOR NON-COVID19 Medical Attention:
1. IESS Patients will continue to go to the IESS clinic for routine medical needs.
2. Other patients can continue to see their regular doctor for routine medical needs.
3. There is a Satellite Clinic, sponsored by the Ministry of Health, located in San Francisco park on the corner by Bank of Pichincha. It is open Monday-Friday 8am – 1pm and is for immunizations, basic prescription refills and the maintenance of ongoing, chronic medical concerns.

FOR COVID19 Symptoms:
1. Most infected persons will shelter at home, using caution and precaution to prevent the spread.
2. If experiencing general cold/flu symptoms, they MUST stay at home and not go about the town.
3. If people are experiencing flu-like symptoms, but not difficulty breathing, they should begin a regime of Paracetomol (otherwise known as Tylenol), keep fluid intake up, hot tea.
4. People experiencing difficulty breathing, dry cough and/or have a temperature of 38.50 C – 390 C (101.30 F – 102.20 F) should go immediately to the Cotacachi Emergency room and NOT TO A DOCTOR’S office.

Prescription Drugs from Outside of Ecuador:

For any of you who are considering getting needed prescription drugs shipped here from the US or Canada or elsewhere, due to friends/relatives or folks not able to mule them down here, the following information was obtained from Rosa Bonilla, owner of the new UPS store in Cotacachi:
1. All Prescription Drug shipments have to go through a complicated Customs process.
2. The Customs process can take between 1 -3 months.
3. Customs will contact you, once the shipment arrives in Ecuador.
4. Customs will require that you email a copy of the prescription from your doctor and a copy of the invoice of the medication. If this information is unavailable, the shipment will be refused and either sent back or destroyed.
5. Customs will require that you pay an import tax, based on the cost of the medication.
6. The import tax must be paid at the designated bank.
7. Once you make the payment, you have to wait around 15 days for delivery.
8. You cannot ship more than 4 of the same item.
9. You can use Rosa’s Cotacachi store location as your final shipping destination.
10. ***NOTE**** RIGHT NOW, even the flat UPS envelopes, that do not go thru a customs process, are NOT being delivered from Quito to Cotacachi.

Movement by Vehicle or Foot:

There appears to be much confusion regarding the current movement rules. Vehicle movement is right now GLOBAL across all of Ecuador. Pedestrian or Foot traffic is regulated by canton/town. Cotacachi and Ibarra have different pedestrian/foot traffic rules.

Vehicles: Your private car or Taxi can only drive on ONE day of the week, based on the last digit of the license plate, shown below. NO CARS or TAXIS are permitted on Saturday or Sunday.
Plate ending in 1 or 2 can drive on Monday
Plate ending in 3 or 4 can drive on Tuesday
Plate ending in 5 or 6 can drive on Wednesday
Plate ending in 7 or 8 can drive on Thursday
Plate ending in 9 or 0 can drive on Friday

Pedestrian or Foot Traffic in Cotacachi: You can shop in town to get food or medicine two days a week, based on the last digit of your cedula or passport. NOTHING has changed with this since it was first announced.
Cedulas or Passports ending in 1, 2 or 3 can shop on Monday and Friday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 4, 5 or 6 can shop on Tuesday and Saturday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 7, 8 or 9 can shop on Wednesday and Sunday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 0 can shop on Monday and Thursday

Pedestrian or Foot Traffic in Ibarra: You can shop in Ibarra just ONE day a week, based on the last digit of your cedula or passport.
Cedulas or Passports ending in 1 or 2 can shop on Monday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 3 or 4 can shop on Tuesday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 5 or 6 can shop on Wednesday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 7 or 8 can shop on Thursday
Cedulas or Passports ending in 9 or 0 can shop on Friday

Thank you, take care and stay safe over this holiday weekend…..

*****APRIL 10 – OBTAINING A SALVOCONDUCTOR PASS*****

OBTAINING A SALVOCONDUCTOR PASS to get to a doctor or hospital:

I have been in touch with Ary Jaramillo, a lawyer who practices out of Ibarra and Quito. I sent her a few questions regarding situations where a person may need to get to the hospital but it is not the day that that their car can be on the road. She assembled a video of how to get a ONE DAY Salvoconductor Pass so you can travel from Cotacachi to Ibarra to get to the doctor or hospital etc. This is very informative and could be used for a taxi driver also whose day it is not to drive, but you need to get somewhere urgent.

In the video, she also shows you how you can vie other important, informational COVID19 videos she has done.

*****APRIL 8 – MASKS, TAXI DRIVERS, NEW CHC WEBSITE, FRIDAY ZOOM MEETING INVITE*****

There are some new rules again here in Ecuador, an updated Taxi Driver list, a NEW website for Cotacachi Health Network and the meeting invite for the ZOOM meeting on Friday.

MASKS:

It is now a law throughout Ecuador that you MUST wear a mask/scarf when you are out and about. This was a prior requirement for entering stores and mercados, etc, but this is now it is a nationwide rule.

With this law, it states that N95 masks should only be worn by medical personnel and police. If you are not one of these folks and you are wearing an N95 mask, you could be fined. ***I did not set this rule, so please do not email me about this***, I am just reporting it.

For me personally, I have N95 masks that were purchased in the US over 8 months ago and I have worn them when walking down our dusty street. I will continue to wear these masks now but will cover it so you cannot tell is it a N95 mask.

Here is a quick video on how to make a no sew mask. Again, you can simply wear a scarf or bandana or just any face covering.

*****APRIL 5 – PHARMACIES – IBARRA RESTRICITONS – CHC ZOOM MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT****

Pharmacies are open from 8am to 2pm. The pharmacy by the hospital is open until 7:30 pm. The schedule below is for what is known as "farmacia de turno" or the 'on-call' pharmacy, which, by definition, is available 24 hours per day by this schedule.
So the schedule below are which pharmacies have the 24 hr shift in town. This has always been in place, and now it is listed. For the date ranges listed, the pharmacy is on call from 12pm to 12pm.

3 or 4 can shop on Tuesday
5 or 6 can shop on Wednesday

We will go over the new concept of a Personal Support Network (document attached), Review Emergency Forms (documents attached) and have short COVID19 update. Print out the attached documents and having them to follow along during the meeting may be helpful. I have attached both a Word and PDF version of the Emergency forms.

In order to attend the meeting, you will need to do a 1-time download of the ZOOM software to your PC, tablet or phone.

*****APRIL 3 – EVENING NOTICE OF NEW DRIVING RESTRICTIONS*****

So sorry for the additional email but the restrictions for driving have been published.
Staring Monday, April 6th. Private vehicles can ONLY drive ONE day a week.
Plates Ending in Can Drive on
1 or 2 Monday
3 or 4 Tuesday
5 or 6 Wednesday
7 or 8 Thursday

Please remember, this affects taxi drivers also. I will work to try to get an updated list of what drivers can drive on what days.

****APRIL 3 – NOTICE FROM THE COE and FRESH AIR/EXERCISE*****

The following updated decree was posted yesterday. I have no seen no further updates or details (especially regarding the one noting “traffic light” restrictions). I surmise there will be different restrictions by province based on the number of cases in each province. We will just have to see what eventually gets reported on this.

National Emergency Operations Committee (COE) today extended the term of restrictions of movement. These are the ten resolutions adopted today:
- Suspension of classes throughout the month of April.
- Suspension of the face-to-face workday until Sunday, April 12.
- Suspension of international and inter-provincial passenger transport throughout the month of April.
- Prohibition of movement of natural persons between provinces.
- Suspension of mass events and public shows during April and May.
- Obligation of all GAD authorities (mayors, prefects, etc.) to abide by the resolutions of the national COE.
- Extension of permits and safe conduct to guarantee the services of health, safety, food, utilities, sectors strategic, financial services, communications and media, and export chains.
- Enabling the SOS COVID tool to identify areas of risk due to crowding.
- Enabling of a traffic light with restrictions according to the provinces that are in red, orange or green, from April 13, 2020.
- Do not accept the proposal of a curfew for 24 hours.
President Moreno said new restrictions on private vehicles are also being analyzed.
https://www.elcomercio.com/actualidad/coe-suspension-clases-jornada-laboral.html?fbclid=IwAR3murV8BXxhqqtm8beyMKKBpbwOEYlBT9WGkDqnM4HxpLgS0QZbNQ2nZAw
Remember, try to get some fresh air and exercise. If you have your own yard, walk around in it. If you have no yard, open a window and then just walk around in your house, room to room. Put some upbeat music on and walk to the beat of the music. Do this multiple times a day. This exercise is good for you and will help you sleep also.

Again…let all do our part…..practice social distancing…..

*****MARCH 29***** Miscellaneous Items

1. A great summary article published today in CuencaHighlife:

https://cuencahighlife.com/understanding-the-covid-19-health-emergency-rules-and-when-will-they-end/?fbclid=IwAR0AHOfPuUxl0Mq46TQ6eMqqWBL8EAJPE3G3-jtFLq72U5w_VcXBAKEAsXk

2. There has been clarification regarding the curfew hours. If company or business is delivery food, essential products or meals, their curfew is 7pm and not 2pm. Here is a translated quote from the article:

“By decision of National Emergency Operations Committe, service of delivery and distribution of victuals, first necessity products and meals prepared at home can be realized until 7pm during curfew and even during vehicular restrictions”

I do NOT know how this will change any restaurant or delivery service you are using…..please contact them direct.

3. Christina’s Natualeza Vida store on Bolivar:
Christina of Naturaleza Vida is not open as you probably know. She has offered to bring supplements and other products to you. But, since she does not want to be out and about more than necessary she asked that you speak with people who live around you to see if you can put together a joint order with them so she can limit the time she is out. Her number is 099 458 3157.

4. Fransisco Charvet – Bread Baker normally at Solid Rock Plaza

5. Technological Solutions (Luis and Susie) +593 98 548 3133 From Jennifer Muns Burnham: This nice young couple made a house call to set up a new cell phone for us, and are open to serving other ex-pats who live in central Cotacachi. They have the shop that’s right in front of the bus stop in the main park. They took the phone to their shop, and brought it back the next day. We found them to be VERY responsive, helpful and inexpensive. They have a little English, but it would work best if you use WhatsApp so that they can use a translator to correspond. Describe your need, I feel confident that the won’t say “yes” if the answer is really “no”.

Of course, James Scarberry is a Whiz “Kid” and he’s bi-lingual! He transferred data from and old Mac to a new HP and provided a lot of tutorial without making me feel like an idiot! (Not all geeks can do that, you know.) WhatsApp text works best for him, too: +593 99 438 2296

6. Feeling Good – Please try to get out and get some fresh air every day. If you have a yard, walk around! If you have a window, open it up and sit by it! Sunshine and fresh air is good for all us…..

Also, If you want to hear and “see” some great music by our local expat band, Shades of Grey, they have put out a series of videos this week. These are their practice sessions done before the stay at home measure was enacted. It is just their way of helping you get thru the day with some tunes we all know. Just go to www.youtube.com and in the search bar, enter SOG: 6 FEET APART SERIES

Then just click on the picture on the left and it will take you to the recording.

Again, if there is any piece of factual news that should be included in these emails, please let me know.

*****March 26 – NO OUT AFTER 2PM*****

Tis another day, with stronger enforcement of the rules…

  1. NO ONE, including YANNECK and LINDSAY’s Meat Mobile can be out after 2pm.  Restaurants cannot do deliveries; businesses are shut down and everyone should be in their homes and off the streets.  Of course, if there is an emergency you can be out, but you best just be on your way to the hospital or doctor.
  2. You can still travel to SuperMaxi in Ibarra, on valid days based on your license plate number.  But, if you are over 65 and/or do not have a mask, you will not be allowed inside.  SuperMaxi hours are 8am – 12:30pm.  Today, Thursday, there were reports of folks waiting OVER 1 HOUR to just to enter and shop.  It might be in your best interest to shop here in town at Tia on D’Agosto or Coco’s on Sucre.

With the shorter time allowed to be out and about, now is the time to do a better job of planning accordingly.  Purchase a few days of food from a restaurant and save it for future days.  Order with a restaurant the afternoon or evening before, so they have a better plan on what to cook that day and then done delivering and home by 2pm.  Place your order with Yanneck to last a few days.

We can all do our part to help in these trying times….

*****March 25- NO MOVEMENT RESTRICTIONS BY CEDULA, NOTICE FROM US EMBASSY*****

Also, please remember that I am not setting the rules/notices, nor do I have any psychological training or ESP as to why the rules have been set.  I am simply culling factual confirmed news to forward along to you. 😊

If you have discovered any additional news items or other questions, feel free to email me direct.

News/Updates for today from CHC:

  1. There was a document circulating that stated that movement was to be restricted by cedula number.  This was confirmed with the Municipio to be FALSE!  There are NO MOVEMENT restrictions in place for Cotacachi as of Today, Wednesday March 25th at noon.
  2. With the NEW curfew hours, deliveries of food from restaurants or others offering delivery services will have to fall into the curfew hours.  Even folks with Salvoconductor passes (which allow them to drive on all days regardless of their plate number) have to abide by the curfew hours of only driving between 5am and 2pm.  The Mobile Response Unit from Amici Cannis also falls under this curfew restriction.  NOTE Lindsey and Yanneck have been afforded safe passage by the police on Thursday for their deliveries.  Yanneck has been afforded safe passage also for his deliveries.
  3. Banks are changing their office hours due to the new curfew. Banco Pichincha will be open from 09:00 to 12:00 and in shopping centers from 10:00 to 12:00. Banco del Pacífico reported that it will operate until 12:00. Banco de Guayaquil will open its offices at 09:00, in the shopping centers at 10:00 and the closing will be at 12:00. Of course, ATMs are available at any time.
  4. SuperMaxi now has new rules in place – Hours are from 8:00am to 12:30pm, only one person per family, no one over 65 allowed in, no children allowed in and you must wear a mask
  5. Tia in Cotacachi Hours are now 7:00am to 12:30pm
  1. NOTICE FROM THE US EMBASSY
Health Alert: U.S. Embassy, Quito, Ecuador (March 24, 2020)

EVENT: United States Government Humanitarian Charter Flights Available NOW

Please read this message in its entirety.

            STATE DEPARTMENT SPONSORED CHARTER FLIGHTS:

U.S. citizens seeking to return to the United States from Ecuador may be able to access U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT-chartered humanitarian flights in addition to already existing commercial charters. These new humanitarian flights are available to U.S. Citizens departing from both Guayaquil and Quito airports to Miami. We are researching the possibility of flights from Cuenca, but are unable to confirm at this time. Ticket costs will be comparable to full-fare economy flights that would have been charged immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To obtain a ticket on a U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT-chartered flight from Quito or Guayaquil, you should email QTOUSCitizen@state.gov IMMEDIATELY with the information requested in the form below. EIGHT such flights have been initially programmed from Ecuador to Miami International Airport (MIA): Two flights per day are scheduled to depart from both Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport and from Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport the afternoons of both Thursday, March 26, 2020 and Friday, March 27, 2020 (exact times will be confirmed). Exact flight departure time and routing are subject to change.

Please do not call the Embassy or Consulate to confirm receipt of your email; we WILL contact you directly with your itinerary once you are confirmed for a seat on one of these State Department-chartered flights. At this time, we anticipate responding within 12 hours with an email confirmation and/or further instructions. There may be delays depending on demand. Please be prepared to depart; we aim to provide as much notice as possible.

No pets will be allowed on these government-chartered flights. If you are travelling with pets, we suggest contacting a commercial airline directly. (Several of the commercial charter companies appear to be permitting some pets at this time.)

All passengers on State Department-chartered flights are required to reimburse the U.S. Government for their tickets and must sign a promissory note (U.S. Department of State Form DS-5528) before boarding. Tickets are available through evacuation loans only, and not direct purchase. The promissory note serves as a repayment agreement with the Department of State for your evacuation loan/charter flight ticket and it includes information about repayment options. No cash or credit card payments will be accepted at the airport. We do not have specific cost information at this time; however, ticket costs will be comparable to full-fare economy flights that would have been charged immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once you are confirmed for a specific flight, you will receive your itinerary, detailed instructions for completing Promissory Note DS-5528, and instructions for check-in and processing at the airport. Do not come to the designated airport unless you have received confirmation for one of the flights. Again, we take this opportunity to remind you that you should respect established curfew hours from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., effective March 25, 2020. U.S. citizens should comply with all local laws and monitor local news for any updates.

In your email to QTOUSCitizen@state.gov, please complete the following form for each member of your family group. All fields are required. Please respond with one email per family group, repeating the form for each family member/passenger. By completing this form, you are requesting a seat(s) on one of the arranged charter flights. Family members accompanying you do not need to be U.S. citizens.

*****March 24 – PM – NEW CURFEW HOURS*****

NEW CURFEW HOURS – Starting tomorrow, the 25th, you are only allowed to be out from 5am – 2pm

Another updated from Yanneck:

Tía does deliveries to your house now! That might help me quite a bit 😀 If you need help with the Spanish, you can send me your order and I'll just translate or directly place it with them. I don't know how far they deliver, though, and if they know the ways around the barricades in the communities.

SuperMercado 10 de Agosto (Mónica) does the same, and she speaks English.

*****March 24 – AM – NEW MERCADO HOURS, DELIVERY OPTIONS *****

Mercado hours changed and I am reposting about Yanneck and Pablo.  Aside from that…no other news.

Mercado Hours are now 6am to 2pm.  You must wear a scarf or mask to enter.  Posted rules state that elders and children are not allowed BUT I know folks who are over 65 have been allowed in.  Just be aware that you could be turned away if you are over 65.

Yanneck’s Delivery Service (contact him at 095-999-4441 phone or WhatsApp)  or sign up on-line and place your order  https://mailchi.mp/84f87…/emergency-delivery-service-4775460   – Restaurant Food, groceries, mercado items etc.

****March 23 – MERCADO HOME DELIVERY *****

Not much new to report…status quo, stay at home.

Being stuck at home, I am sure you are all possibly getting to your “honey do” lists.  BUT, please be careful with this!  Don’t go doing anything risky with ladders or saws or something that your gardener or handyman does as you don’t want to have an accident and need medical attention.  If you are outside, please remember to keep hydrated as the sun is hot here.  Now is the time for folks to be extra careful, so as not to have an accident. We all want to do our best to keep away from any medical facility, if possible.

The folks at the Mercado are also doing home deliveries and below are numbers that you can contact them at.  I would suggest you use WhatsApp and translate your message into Spanish first before sending it to one of the “09” numbers below.

****March 21 – COLLECTING EMAILS; NEW TEMPORARY CLINIC*****

This is again another notice from Cotacachi Health Network to disseminate information to folks who are not on Facebook, where most updates are noted.

FIRST, if there is anyone receiving these emails who wishes no longer to receive them, please reply back to me and I will remove you.

SECOND, if there is ANYONE that you know of who should be getting this email and you are not sure if they are, PLEASE forward this along and ask them to send me their email address.  Regardless if you are Cotacachi Health Network member, I would like to collect any emails to be included in this distribution.

THIRD, Cotacachi Health Network is working on a ZOOM, online meeting to talk about our new concept of Personal Support Networks and other items to be prepared for an emergency in Cotacachi.  Now is the time to be as best prepared as possible. The collection of emails will facilitate sending out invites.  Depending on how long the restriction regarding meetings goes on, we plan to have future ZOOM meetings on other topics.

  1. The Municipio has installed a temporary Health Unit at the corner of Rocafuerte and Imbabura (near Bank of Pinchicha).

From Dra. Luz... “The new clinic will be for control of people who have regular needs like high blood pressure meds, diabetes or vaccinations for children. For example, if you need medication from your regular doctor in Ibarra or Otavalo, you can go to this clinic. But do not go there for testing for COVID-19 or if you’re symptomatic of flu.”

The goal is to separate the super sick from those who need routine care. There was a concern that more “healthy” people who needed basic control of diabetes, high blood pressure, or their child needed a vaccination, were going to the same place and mixing with very sick people.

The health care community wants those with respiratory problems, high fever or feeling very ill or have emergencies to go, as normal, to the hospital. NOT the new clinic, next to Banco Pichincha.

Do not go there for testing for COVID-19 or if you’re symptomatic of flu.

  1. Misc errand Running – “Cotacachi’s Favorite Son”

A recommendation from Jennifer Munns Burnham:

We have a friend, Pablo Duque, who has recently moved to Cotacachi who is able to run errands (and more) for ex-pats.  He started his own business "Cotacachi's Favorite Son" just before the COVID19 restrictions took off.  (Talk about good timing!)

Here's a little insider info on Pablo.   He is 30, born in Colombia, raised from infancy in Quito.  Single, never married, no kids.  College educated, like other young people - good with technology.  English is limited, but he's living with a gringo and working hard to improve his English.  He's good at using Google translate on his phone.

Reliable, HONEST AND PUNCTUAL He has NEVER left us waiting or been a no show. Willing to do most anything that a good son would do (but not bathe women or help them with toileting).  Strong - He would be good (with customized training) to help with transfers for folks with limited mobility.

Affordable, and willing to negotiate.  He's putting together monthly package deals like bills (keep track of them, pay them for you), IVA refunds (work in progress).  He has access to a sturdy bicycle with a heavy-duty plastic tub installed on the back for grocery deliveries when there are no taxis

I wholeheartedly recommend him!

  1. Another Group to run Errands and Help:
A recommendation from Susan Murray and myself

The Venezuelan family that lives with Susan Murray wants you to know that they are available to help anyone needing something during this time, free of cost. They can pick up groceries for you, deliver meds to you, and other various jobs needed due to the restricted travel. Also, if you want to buy cheese from them, they are happy to deliver it to you. BTW, I heard this particular cheese is outstanding!

The entire family has talents – nursing, woodworking, painting – and they are willing to help.  I, Brenda, have been teaching some of the family at Uno y Uno and their comprehension is very good.  Susan can help with translations, if needed. Please email Susan direct at smurray566@gmail.com .

I will make myself available to anyone who is struggling to deal with the current situation, and issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and other stress related symptoms. I use FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Skype to do my work virtually. If you would be interested in setting up a time to talk with me, then contact me via phone: 0993265170 or email: gags3333@gmail.com. The call will be answered by our English-speaking administrator who will inform the lead Veterinarian, who will then assess the situation. If she warrants it is an emergency, the MRU will be dispatched   to pick up the animal. Brian has been issued a special permit and is allowed to attend the community for emergency animal related cases. Please do not contact the MRU directly; all calls must be processed in the manner indicated above for the next 14 days.
Please note that should you require specific animal medications or specialized food, please contact us, and if in stock, the MRU can deliver it to your home.

  1. Update from Yanneck and his delivery service: (contact him at 095-999-4441 phone or WhatsApp)

Hey friends! I hope you’re not bored yet 😉

After quite a few deliveries already, I came to the conclusion that I can disinfect my hands as many times as I want and could even wear a hazard suit - there’s still the money. Money is perfect to transmit virus or bacteria as far as I know, so I suggest the following: I won’t give you any change. There are 3 possibilities:

  1. You give me exact change, which will be difficult after a while.
  2. You round up to the next $10 or $20 and we both write it down as credit for the next purchase or to return after this is over.
  3. You deposit on my bank account via internet banking.

What do you think? Is it better not to bring any change from the outside to your houses?

P.S.: If you’re running low on cash and are a high-risk group, let me know. We can always settle up later. Please don’t take any      risk by going to the bank just to pay up, it’s not worth it and I can wait.

Thank you...stay safe, stay at home and we will all get thru this….

*****March 16 – CHC FIRSTUPDATE: NEW LAWS, SOCIAL DISTANCING, DELIVERY SERVICE *****

Hello Everyone,

Apologies for the long email, but there is a lot of information below.  Take your time to read thru it.  There are 7 primary items.

This is being provided to you in an email form in case many of you are not on Facebook, which has many updates.

  1. As you know there is a declared pandemic reaching out over the globe.  Countries are trying to stay ahead and reduce the large potential spike of numbers of people getting ill.  With this, Ecuador is being very proactive with measures to ensure the best health and safety of its citizens.

COVID-19 Stats in Ecuador (from El Comerico)

Today, March 16th, The National Risk and Emergency Management Service confirmed that until 09:00 today there are 58 cases of COVID-19 coronavirus in Ecuador. That's more than double the number of cases two days ago. Guayas is the province with the highest number of confirmed infected people: 38. Los Ríos follows with 10 cases, Pichincha with seven, Sucumbíos with one, Manabí has one and Azuay also with one case.

  1. Ecuador has closed the borders as of midnight tonight.  No incoming persons on foot or boat or plane can arrive here.  People are free to leave but most air carriers have cancelled all flights outbound also.  Starting tonight, March 16 at midnight, Ecuador is restricting the movement of people and vehicles:

From the official announcement, translated:

GOVERNMENT OF ECUADOR ANNOUNCES NEW MEASURES TO FACE THE SANITARY EMERGENCY BY CORONAVIRUS COVID 19 (translated from the official government notice)

President Lenín Moreno, on the national radio and television channel on the night of this Sunday, March 15, 2020, announced a series of complementary measures to confront the health emergency due to the spread of the Covid 19 coronavirus in the country. These actions are added to those already advanced yesterday by Vice President Otto Sonnenlhozner.

The president announced restrictions on the movement of people and vehicles. Exclusively:

  1. To purchase food, basic necessities and pharmaceutical products.
  2. To attend health centers.
  3. To get to the workplace and to return to your home.

  1. From our own Cota resident, Christine Wandling, retired Nurse Practitioner who specialized in HIV medicine and infectious diseases related to HIV disease, she has assembled the following information from CDC recommendations on novel coronavirus, Pub Med guidelines, and the British Medical Journal epidemiology reference for 2019 novel coronavirus.

Novel Coronavirus 2019

The Novel Coronavirus 2019 (2019nCOV) is a respiratory virus similar to SARS and MERS with bat origin.

It is also related to the less serious Coronavirus strain that causes the common cold.

It is known to have person to person spread via close contact (6 feet.)

Symptomatic individuals are most contagious.

The virus has not shown itself to be highly contagious during the incubation period (non-symptomatic phase.)

The mean incubation period is 5 days.

Symptoms of Novel Coronavirus

Patients have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory symptoms of: Fever, Cough and Shortness of Breath. This virus targets the lower respiratory tract more than the seasonal flu.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. People may go from feeling quite well to having early signs of pneumonia over a period of days, without a lot of the symptoms you usually see with common cold or flu (i.e. runny nose, sore throat, malaise.)

Worrisome or serious symptoms are:  persistent high fever, severe non-productive cough, shortness of breath, painful breathing sometimes described as feeling like suffocation. These symptoms require medical attention. Mild symptoms are encouraged to be reported so that you can be screened to determine if further testing is needed to detect the virus. Follow instructions provided by the health ministry.

Most individuals will be able to recover from 2019 nCOV at home.

Protecting Yourself

  • Stock up on supplies- avoid over buying in panic (i.e. toilet paper)
  • Take precautions in all interactions by keeping space between yourself and others
  • Stay away from people who are sick
  • Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you are prepared to stay home for a period of time
  • Avoid touching, mouth, nose, eyes
  • Wash hands or gel frequently and whenever contacting obvious sources
  • Clean visibly dirty surfaces and follow with disinfection to prevent spread of virus. Current evidence suggest novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Household cleaners are adequate.
  • Follow healthy habits: eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids and go outside for exercise. These are the things that keep our immune systems strong.
  • Be sure to have over the counter symptom medicines on hand for your comfort should you get sick. These include Tylenol for fever, cold symptom medicines and fluids to keep the respiratory tract well hydrated.

  1. The concept of “social distancing” is to reduce the peak numbers of infected people that could overwhelm the medical system.  Peak numbers would result in too many folks for the limited number of hospital beds and ventilators.  These articles explain this:https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/http://theconversation.com/how-to-flatten-the-curve-of-coronavirus-a-mathematician-explains-133514

Remember, this is a free service. We want you to stay well and happy and - as dramatic as it sounds - alive. It’s also an emergency situation and stressful and chaotic and we will forget and mix up and fail. But we’ll give our best, and we’re always open to feedback, but please, try to be constructive. This whole initiative is also not just altruistic; we need to save our businesses and the jobs that we provide, and we think that we can do that best by cooperating.

Stay safe, stay at home.

  1. Last but not least, Cotacachi Health Network has been trying for the last 2 years to get folks to step up.  We unfortunately have not had the response desired.  So the board brainstormed and came up with an alternative for Cota residents – your Personal Support Network (PSN).  If you are part of an active Health Chapter, this will NOT go away.  But for folks who would like to be part of something, the Personal Support Network is what you would assemble yourself.  You may already have a PSN and don’t realize it!  This is just your own personal group of friends or neighbors that you can rely on to assist you post emergency.  We say post emergency, as everyone needs to assemble their own emergency plan.  With your PSN, you can share information, keys to your house, where your Red folder is located etc.

To supplement what is gained from a Health Network meeting, the Cotacachi Health Network Board will schedule regular Cota-Wide meetings (every other month). These meetings will start with reminders of filling our your Red Folder sheets and making sure you have an emergency plan.  The meeting will then have a guest speaker and end with an open forum for folks to share their medical experiences and ask questions of the group.  Our first meeting was going to be held this month but for obvious reasons it cannot be held and this document is being sent instead.

So, in this time of social distancing and spending time at home, please think of folks that you would want in your PSN and be prepared to talk with them when we are able to be social again.

We hope this information helps each of you out. Stay tuned for our Cota-Wide meetings and for everyone to pay their 2020 dues.
